SUMMARY:Zimbabwean Drum Class with Napoleon
DESCRIPTION:Napoleon Jambwa will lead a workshop in Zimbabwean rhythms and songs to connect you with the powerful energy of the drum. Bring a hand drum; congas\, djembes\, dundun\, and hosho will all work in the class that will move through several different Zimbabwean rhythms. Some parts are played using two drums so if you have two make sure to bring them and be ready to sing and play. There are some drums at Denfinity available to use if you don’t have one. DESCRIPTION:Rujeko will lead us through movements related to Zimbabwean rhythm and song. She will help us internalize the music by repeating simple to more intricate steps. Rujeko’s teaching style supports all dance levels from first timers to seasoned dancers. If you have magavhu (leg rattles) be sure to bring them. DESCRIPTION:We are excited to welcome Zimbabwean performing artists and teachers Rujeko Dumbutshena and Napoleon Kudzie Jambwa to Eugene! They will be teaching the song Zuva during their visit to Kutsinhira. \nMarimba class\nThursday\, July 2nd\n4:00-5:30pm\nCost for the class is $20\ncash • PayPal • Venmo accepted \nPizza and Cultural Discussion with Rujeko and Napoleon\n(following the all levels marimba class)\n5:45-7:30pm\nA casual dinner of pizza with salad and discussion about some aspects of Zimbabwean music and culture with these two bright stars.\nSuggested donation $10-$20 \nRSVP’s are appreciated\, but not required for the pizza dinner and cultural discussion that follows the marimba class. \nPlease contact Marilyn Kolodziejczyk by text (541-521-1454) or email (mkolo@kutsinhira.org) to register\, RSVP\, or if you have any questions. \nThank you for your generous support for our visiting teachers! \nRujeko Dumbutshena is a Zimbabwean born dancer\, teacher\, cultural arts community organizer\, and performing artist of African dance practices.\nShe received her MFA from the University of New Mexico and is currently an Assistant Professor of Dance at the University of Florida. Her creative research centers on the intersections between gender\, power and ritual.\nThese themes inform her choreography and performance. She conducts community based participatory research to promote sustainable development projects through cultural arts production. \nNapoleon Kudzie Jambwa was born and raised in Highfield\, Harare and grew up steeped in Zimbabwe’s musical traditions. Taught his first mbira song by his father at age five\, he went on to master marimba\, ngoma\, hosho\, and a range of modern instruments\, and added traditional Zimbabwean dance\, to his vast repertoire. He has played as a musician with Thomas Mapfumo and Oliver Mutukudzi\, to name a few. He currently plays in Mbira Dzechijandukwa and is the leader of Pangea band based in Gainesville Florida.

SUMMARY:Camp paGungwa 2026
DESCRIPTION:Kutsinhira Cultural Arts Center is pleased to announce the 21st annual Camp paGungwa (“by the ocean”)\, a four-day mbira intensive on the Oregon Coast with a pair of exceptional mbira teachers in 2026: Jennifer Kyker and Moyo Rainos Mutamba. Moyo will be coming from University of Waterloo\, Canada\, and Jennifer from University of Rochester\, USA. More information about them can be found via the links. \nCamp paGungwa will be held at the usual beachfront home north of Florence\, Oregon\, USA\, on Labor Day weekend (Friday\, Sept. 4 through Monday\, Sept. 7\, 2026). Check-in begins at 7PM on Sept. 4\, with departure at 1PM on Sept. 7. In addition to a full schedule of learning and playing Zimbabwean music\, there will be communal living\, three delicious meals per day\, cultural presentations and enjoyment of the beach\, dunes and forest just steps outside the door. \nHousing is available onsite either indoors (shared bedrooms) or outdoors (deck space or in a small yard). Alternatively\, commercial lodging (Airbnb\, VRBO\, motels\, etc.) can be booked nearby\, with meals taken at Camp. Please email me if you’d like input on local accommodations. The cost of Camp paGungwa includes all instruction\, cultural presentations\, meals\, snacks and onsite accommodation. The fees cover camp expenses (mostly food)\, a small percentage to Kutsinhira\, and the remainder to our teachers. Based on past experience\, we recommend registering early to guarantee your spot at Camp. \n\nEarly-registration discount through July 15\, 2026: $500 ($550 for Kutsinhira non-members). A $100 deposit is due on or before July 15 to reserve your spot (payment info below).\nRegular rate starting July 16\, 2026: $550 ($600 for Kutsinhira non-members). This rate applies to those who submit their $100 deposit on or after July 16.\n\nAnnual membership in Kutsinhira Cultural Arts Center is $50 for an individual or $75 for a family. We also offer lifetime membership for $500. Yearly membership begins on Sept. 1 each year. \nThere are two options for submitting your deposit: \n\nSubmit payment online (PayPal\, Venmo\, debit or credit card) at the Kutsinhira payment portal.\nMail a check made out to Kutsinhira Cultural Arts Center\, to P.O. Box 50823\, Eugene\, Oregon 97405.\n\nThe balance is due on or before the first day of Camp. I suggest that you email me when you submit your deposit. Registered participants will receive a confirmation and further information. \nCancellations on or after Aug. 21\, 2026\, will receive a 50% refund; no refunds will be made for cancellations on or after Aug. 28\, 2026. A full refund will be given for cancellations before Aug. 21. Exceptions to the refund policy may be possible if a vacated spot can be filled by someone on the waiting list.
