Kutsinhira is pleased to announce the 16th annual Camp paGungwa (“by the ocean”), a four-day mbira intensive on the Oregon Coast. This year we are privileged to have our beloved friend and teacher Patience Munjeri as the instructor.
Camp will be held at our traditional ocean-side retreat in Florence, Oregon, on Labor Day weekend 2019.
Mbira will be taught and played from beginner through advanced levels, plus hosho, drumming, singing and dance. A complete workshop schedule is available upon request.
Camp paGungwa is held at a beachfront home north of Florence, Oregon, USA. Check-in is 7PM Friday Aug. 30; departure is 1PM on Monday Sept. 2. In addition to a full schedule of learning and playing Zimbabwean music, there will be communal living, three delicious meals per day, cultural presentations and enjoyment of the beach, dunes & forest just steps outside the door.
On-site housing is available on a first-come, first-served basis when the registration deposit is paid. Alternatively, commercial lodging (from funky to elegant) can be booked nearby in Florence, with meals taken at Camp.
Based on past experience, registration will fill quickly. The cost of Camp paGungwa includes all instruction, cultural presentations, meals, snacks and communal accommodations.
• Early-registration discount through June 30, 2019: $410 ($370 for Kutsinhira members). The full balance is due by June 30 to obtain the discount.
• Regular rate starting July 1, 2019: $445 ($405 for Kutsinhira members).
Annual membership in Kutsinhira Cultural Arts Center is $40 for an individual or $65 for a family and can be included in the fee payment. We also offer lifetime membership for $500. Yearly membership begins on Sept. 1 each year.
If interested, please enquire about rates for “accompanying persons,” who attend meals and social events but not the instructional sessions.
